FairPoint's ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI) Port provides a DS1 level electrical interface to the local switch for the provision of twenty-four DS0 64 Kbps channels.
The configuration consists of twenty-three 64 Kbps "B" channels for end user voice and/or data traffic and one 64 Kbps backup "D" channel for out of band signaling control of the B channels (i.e., the D channel controls all B channels capable of supporting Voice and Circuit Switched Data).
The Primary Rate ISDN Port provides access to the functions and capabilities of the local switch data functions. Channels will always be present at the physical network interface and all channels can simultaneously support independent applications.
Clear digital transmission
Multiple facility signaling control
Incoming calling line identification
Backup D channel
Increased trunking efficiency
Increased call handling efficiency
Added protection, security and recovery capability
Clear digital transmission
Flexibility to provision bandwidth on an as-needed basis
Inexpensive dialed digital access
Backup D Channel - Allows a D channel on a second interface at the same premises to be designated "standby" to carry signaling information for all the B channels on the first and subsequent interfaces. Should the interface or equipment malfunction causing a failure on the D channel, the Backup D channel assumes its signaling and control functions.
Incoming Calling Line Identification - Provided per port, this feature delivers the calling party's number, if available, to the subscriber. If the caller has blocked the display of his number, a private indication is delivered to the end user. The number is delivered if the call originates either in the same node as the ISDN PRI service or is appropriately connected to the ISDN PRI service node by Signaling System 7 (SS7).
Channel Configuration (5ESS Only) - This feature allows some or all B channels to be dedicated with respect to capability and call type (i.e., DOD, DID). Multiple fixed channel trunk groups are established on the same interface (T1). The CLEC needs to specify the number of fixed B channels and their purposes.
Multiple Facility Signaling Control - Allows the D channel of one ISDN PRI service interface to provide signaling for the B channels of another, provided they terminate on the same premises. One D channel can control up to twenty interfaces (479 B channels).
