FairPoint in the Community

Strengthening our communities means supporting our customers with communications technology of the highest quality. This commitment means more than providing our customers with data, voice and video services. It means making investments in the growth of the communities where we do business — contributing to events and organizations that enrich our communities’ quality of life — and making state‐of‐the‐art technologies available so that our communities can attract economic opportunities and jobs.

FairPoint provides financial support to worthy causes, especially those related to expanding access to technology, fostering health and wellness and improving youth education. In 2013, FairPoint made more than $1.2 million in civic and charitable contributions and supported approximately 350 community donations and sponsorships.

More information on how to work with us in your community is below:

What we fund:

In reviewing proposals, we look for projects that:

  • Meet well-defined community needs in FairPoint’s community focus areas

  • Support organizations or people within FairPoint’s service area, especially FairPoint customers

  • Use data to define needs and measure impact

  • Encourage cooperation and collaboration

  • Promote community involvement

  • Build on programs that have proven successful elsewhere

  • Help nonprofit organizations operate more efficiently

  • Are led or supported by our customers and employees

What we do not fund:

We do not generally make grants for endowments, operating expenses (with the exception of a one-time initial planning expense), higher educational institutions (with the exception of the employee matching program), religious purposes, labor and fraternal groups, debt reduction or work that has already been completed. Additionally, we do not make grants to individuals, daycare facilities or school trips. Finally, we do not make grants to organizations that discriminate in any way on the basis of race, religion, gender, age, national origin, disability or sexual orientation.

How much to ask for:

Requests for support should be appropriate to the project, reflect realistic expectations and show diverse funding sources. Our grants vary in size, but the majority of the grants awarded are less than $5,000. In some cases, we may only fund a percentage of a total amount requested. For example, a grant request for $5,000 may be funded at the $3,000 level. It helps if you can suggest a second choice for your funding amount.

When to apply:

FairPoint is well-known for its philanthropic efforts and we receive many requests every day. It’s important that you apply as early as possible to ensure your request can be reviewed and approved in time to meet your needs. This lead time also allows us to create any materials required to support or promote an activity. We can also notify our employees so they may choose to participate if they desire. We make very few exceptions to this process due to the volume of requests and available resources.

How often to apply:

You may apply at any time. However, we encourage organizations to prioritize their requests to ensure that FairPoint can plan to support those proposals that are most important to the organization.

How to apply:

Great news! Our new online application is now available. It is important that you carefully follow the online submission process. Due to the volume of requests, we will no longer accept paper applications or requests made solely via phone, in-person conversation or email.
