SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (July 21, 2011) - Governor Peter Shumlin joined FairPoint Communications' technician Steve LeBlanc to install new high-speed Internet service at a mountainside home in Underhill Center today.

The high-speed hookup marks FairPoint's successful completion of its commitment to bring broadband to tens of thousands more Vermonters this year in more than 140 communities and neighborhoods across the state.

"Places like Underhill, Elmore, Jamaica, Windham, Victory, Lunenberg and dozens of other cities, towns and gores across Vermont now have high-speed access for the first time," said Michael K. Smith, Vermont state president for FairPoint. "In fact, almost 90 percent of our customers now have broadband availability. And that's up from 66 percent three years ago."

"And it's not just the places all over the state, it's the people that live and work here who really matter."

Off of Pleasant Valley Road in rural Underhill Center, the homeowners dropped dialup and can get FairPoint's super-fast 15Mbps service - a first on this backside of Mount Mansfield.

"This is a perfect example of why my ConnectVT initiative is so important to Vermont and to Vermonters," the Governor said. "Families need high-speed access; businesses need it to grow. Frankly, Vermont's future relies on fast access for our continued success."

FairPoint has invested more than $71 million in Vermont since 2008 to bring highspeed access to Vermonters - more than all other providers combined - including building almost 1,000 miles of new fiber and 300 new sites since December.

Editor's Note: FairPoint was granted a temporary extension by the Vermont Public Service Board to complete the Vermont broadband expansion in four locations due to the historic rainfalls and flooding in Grand Isle and Franklin counties. Those locations will be completed by the end of July.
