SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (August 29, 2011) - FairPoint Communications, northern New England's leading telecommunications provider, is working around the clock to restore service in parts of Vermont in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene.

"Vermont took a big beating from Irene," said Michael K. Smith, Vermont state president for FairPoint."Our employees are responding in epic fashion to this epic storm."

Several areas of the state were walloped by flash floods, road washouts and closures, which cut both power and telephone service for Vermonters.

In Pittsfield, FairPoint customers are without telephone service after road closures stranded crews trying to reach the local central office. Approximately 700 customers are affected.

Southern Vermont customers in the Jacksonville and Readsboro areas also have limited service due to the flooding and road closures. FairPoint estimates about 2,000 customers are affected. Customers may not be able to use the 911 system but can still call for assistance to local police stations.

The area west of White River Junction, from Rochester to Bethel and Pittsfield, was hardest hit, Smith said, where up to 1,300 customers are affected.

Customers in Montgomery can make local calls and crews are working to restore full service to more than 700 lines.

FairPoint's garage in Rutland was flooded and equipment and vehicles had to be relocated Sunday.

"There is equipment underwater, fiber is underwater and many of the roads are impassable," said Smith. "We will work around the clock to restore service and will have all customers fully restored as quickly as is possible."

Once road damage and debris is cleaned up, power companies can restore electricity and FairPoint follows with its repair work.

FairPoint will provide updates as the work progresses, Smith said.
