Crews travel ATV trail to be first to restore services to cut-off residents
Stranded on a virtual island, Pittsfield has been without power or telephone service since Sunday. A crew of seven hardy FairPoint technicians took the road less traveled - and it made all the difference.
Using 4-wheel drive vehicles over an ATV trail and hiking over washed out sections of road, FairPoint employees restored telephone service for Pittsfield residents who have been literally cut off from the rest of the state. FairPoint was the first utility to reach the storm-ravaged town.
"It's incredible to see the dedication and take-no-prisoners attitude from our employees," said Mike Smith, Vermont state president for FairPoint. Smith, who traveled with the crew, said "this is a first step for Pittsfield on what will be a difficult road back to normal."
Elsewhere in Vermont, service is being restored in parts of southern Vermont as well, including Stamford and Readsboro.
Crews are also making slow but steady progress to restore service in other affected areas including Rochester. FairPoint customers in Quechee, west of the covered bridge, South Newfane, East Dover and in Bethel on Route 107 west of the bridge may experience longer-term outages as road washouts and power outages continue there.
FairPoint will provide updates as the work progresses.
