Setting POP Frequency

E-mail software can be set up to retrieve your messages automatically on a regular interval. For optimal performance, we recommend you adjust your retrieval setting to check for new messages every 5 minutes.


Microsoft Windows 8 Mail

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with Microsoft Windows 8 Mail.

  1. With Outlook open Click the tab labeled “File” on the top left hand side.
  2. Select “Info” on the left hand navigation
  3. Click “Add Account”
  4. Enter the following information:
    1. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.
    2. Email Address: Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net)
    3. Password: Enter your password.
  5. Click the “Manually configure” checkbox and click next.
  6. Select internet email and click next
  7. For your server information enter:
    1. For your Incoming mail server (IMAP): type imap.fairpoint.net
    2. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
    3. Uncheck the Incoming server requires SSL
    4. Uncheck the Outgoing server requires SSL
  8. Click on the more settings button
  9. Click on the Outgoing Server tab and click on the My Outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication check box
  10. Click on the advanced tab and Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 143, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  11. Click on ok to close the panel
  12. Click Next after making sure the information is correct.
  13. Click finish to end setting up your email.

Microsoft Outlook 2010

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with Outlook 2010.

  1. With Outlook open Click the tab labeled “File” on the top left hand side.

    1. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.

Microsoft Outlook 2007

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with Outlook 2007.

  1. With Outlook 2007 open Click the tools menu and select account settings
  2. Make sure you are on the email tab and click new
  3. Make sure Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP is selected and click next
  4. Click the “Manually configure” checkbox to bypass the auto configure and click next.
  5. Select internet email and click next
  6. Enter the following information: 
    1. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.
    2. Email Address: Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
    3. For your server information enter:
    4. For your Incoming mail server (POP3): type pop3.fairpoint.net
    5. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
    6. User Name: Enter your full Fairpoint Communications' Email Address.
    7. Password: Enter your password.
  7. Click on the more settings button
  8. Click on the Outgoing Server tab and click on the My Outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication check box
  9. Click on the advanced tab and Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings

Windows Live Mail

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with Windows Live Mail for Windows 7.

  1. With Windows live mail open click the add email account link
  2. Enter the following information:
  3. Email Address: Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
  4. Password: Enter your password.
  5. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.
  6. Click the check mark box that says Manually configure server settings
  7. For your server information enter:
    1. For your Incoming mail server (POP3): type pop3.fairpoint.net
    2. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
  8. For your Login ID: enter your full Fairpoint Communications' Email Address.
  9. Click on the check mark box for “Outgoing Server Requires Authentication”
  10. Click on the advanced tab and Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  11. Click next then finish to complete your email setup

Microsoft Outlook® 2003 and Outlook 2002/Outlook XP


This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with Outlook 2003/2002.

  1. With Outlook 2003/2002 open From the Tools menu, select "Email Accounts." (If you do not see "Accounts," place your cursor over the two arrows at the bottom of the list to display more choices.)
  2. Select the radio button next to "Add a new email account" and click the "Next" button.
  3. Select the radio button next to "POP3" and click the "Next" button.
  4. Enter the following information: 
    1. User Information
    2. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.
    3. Email Address: Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
    4. Server Information
    5. For your Incoming mail server (POP3): type pop3.fairpoint.net
    6. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
  5. Login Information:
    1. User Name: Enter your full Fairpoint Communications' Email Address.
    2. Password: Enter your password.
    3. Do not check the box next to "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)."
  6. Click the "More Settings" box and select the "Outgoing Server" tab.
  7. Check the box next to "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication."
  8. Click on the advanced tab and Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  9. Click ok then finish to finish your email set up

Microsoft Outlook® 2000 and Outlook® 98

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with Outlook 2000/Outlook 98.

  1. With Outlook 2000 or Outlook 98 open From the Tools menu, choose "Accounts."
  2. Click the "Add" button.
  3. From the Add menu, click "Mail".
  4. In the Display Name box, type your name as you would like it to appear when you send a message, and then click "Next".
  5. In the E-Mail Address text box, enter your email address (e.g. john@fairpoint.net), and then click "Next".
  6. In the box labeled "My incoming mail server is a..." select "POP3" server.
  7. For your server information enter:
    1. Type "mail." followed by your domain name (e.g. pop3.fairpoint.net) in the Incoming Mail Server box.
    2. Type "smtp." followed by your domain name (e.g. smtp.fairpoint.net) in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server box.
  8. Click "Next".
  9. In the Account Name box, enter your full email address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
  10. In the Password box, enter your password.
  11. Do not check "Log On Using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)."
  12. Click "Next".
  13. Choose the appropriate connection type under the "Which Method Do You Use to Connect to the Internet" heading
  14. If you chose "Connect using my phone line," you will need to select a dial-up connection in the Dial-up Connection Wizard and click "Next".
  15. Click "Finish."
  16. Select the Fairpoint Communications' Mail account (e.g. pop3.fairpoint.net and click "Properties."
  17. Select the "Servers" tab. Check the box next to "My Server Requires Authentication."
  18. Click on the advanced tab and Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  19. Click ok then close to finish your email set up

Microsoft Outlook® Express

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with Outlook Express.

  1. From the Tools menu, choose "Accounts."
  2. Click the "Add" button.
  3. From the Add menu, click "Mail".
  4. In the text box labeled Display Name, type your name and click "Next".
  5. In the Email Address box, type your full email address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
  6. Select "POP3" to answer the question "My incoming mail server is a..."
    1. Type "mail." followed by your domain name (e.g. pop3.fairpoint.net) in the Incoming Mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) Server box.
    2. Type "smtp." followed by your domain name (e.g. smtp.fairpoint.net) in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server box.
  7. Click "Next"
  8. In the Account Name box, type your full email address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
  9. In the Password box, type your password.
  10. If you want Outlook® Express to remember your password, check the "Remember password" box.
  11. Do not check the "Log on using secure password" box.
  12. Click "Next"
  13. Click "Finish"
  14. Select the Fairpoint Communications' Mail account (e.g. pop3.fairpoint.net and click "Properties."
  15. Select the "Servers" tab. Check the box next to "My Server Requires Authentication."
  16. Click on the advanced tab and Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings

Eudora 7.x

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with Eudora 7.

  1. With Eudora 7 open Click on the "File" menu and select "New” and select “Mail Account”
  2. Your Name: Enter your name as you want it to appear on the "From" line of your outgoing email.
  3. Email Address: Enter your full email address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
  4. Password: Enter your password.
  5. Click Continue
  6. Enter the following information:
    1. Incoming Email Server: Type: "mail." followed by your domain name (e.g. pop3.fairpoint.net and make sure that "POP" is selected at the bottom.
    2. Outgoing Email Server: Type: "smtp." followed by your domain name (e.g. smtp.fairpoint.net) in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server box.
  7. Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  8. User Name: Enter your full Fairpoint Communications' Email Address.
  9. Click the “Create Account” Icon
  10. Click the “tools” menu and select “account settings”
  11. With your email account selected  click on “outgoing server (smtp) and click edit
  12. Click the box for “Use secure authentication”
  13. Click ok, then ok again to finish setting up your account

Incredimail

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with Incredimail.

  1. With incredimail open Click on the tools menu and click accounts
  2. Click the add button in the mail accounts screen
  3. Select “Let me configure settings myself” and click next
  4. Click on other
  5. Enter the following information:
    1. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.
    2. Email Address: Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
    3. Password: Enter your password
  6. Click Next
  7. Enter the following information:
    1. For your Incoming mail server (POP3): type pop3.fairpoint.net
    2. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
  8. Click Next
  9. Click Ok
  10. Click on the tools menu and click email accounts
  11. In the mail accounts screen make sure your account is highlighted and click on the properties button
  12. Click on the servers tab
  13. Enter the following information:
  14. Username: Enter your full email address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net)
  15. Password: Enter your password.
  16. Click on the “My server requires authentication” check box
  17. Click the more settings button
  18. Make sure the “Use same settings as my incoming mail server” is selected
  19. Click ok
  20. Click on the advanced tab and Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  21. On the email properties click ok and close to finish

Vista Mail

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with Vista Mail.

  1. Click the tools menu and select account
  2. On the next screen click the add button
  3. Select email account and click next
  4. Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages then click next
  5. Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net) and click next
  6. Make sure Pop3 is selected then Enter the following information:
    1. For your Incoming mail server (POP3): type pop3.fairpoint.net
    2. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
  7. Click on the “My server requires authentication” check box and click next
    1. Enter the following information:
    2. Email User Name: Enter your full Fairpoint Communications' Email Address.
    3. Password: Enter your password.
  8. Click Next 
  9. Check the “do not download my email and folders at this time” and then finish
  10. With your new email account highlighted click the properties button
  11. Click on the servers tab 
  12. Click on the “My server requires authentication” check box
  13. Click on the advanced tab and Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  14. Click next then close to finish your email set up

Thunderbird 3

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with Thunderbird 3.

  1. With Thunderbird 3 open Click on the file menu and select new and click on mail account
  2. Enter the following information:
  3. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.
  4. Email Address: Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
  5. Password: Enter your password.
  6. Click on continue
  7. Thunderbird will attempt to find your email setting automatically if it fails
  8. Enter in:
    1. User Name: Enter your full Fairpoint Communications' Email Address.
    2. For your Incoming mail server (POP3): type pop3.fairpoint.net
    3. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
  9. Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  10. Click the create account button to finish your email setup

Thunderbird 2

  1. With Thunderbird 2 open Click on the tools menu and select account settings
  2. Click the add account button
  3. Select Email account and click next

    1. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.
    2. Email Address: Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).

  6. Make sure POP is selected and enter
  7. For your Incoming mail server (POP3): type pop3.fairpoint.net
  8. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
  9. Click the next button
  10. Enter in
    1. User Name: Enter your full Fairpoint Communications' Email Address
    2. Click the next button
    3. Enter in the account name
  11. Click the next button
  12. Click finish if all the information is correct
  13. Click on tools menu and click account settings
  14. Click on outgoing server and click edit
  15. Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  16. Click ok then ok again
  17. Click on get mail and enter in your password to finish configuring your email account

Opera

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with Opera.

  1. With Opera open click on the menu button and select mail and chat accounts
  2. Click yes to create a new account
  3. Make sure Email is selected and click next
  4. Enter the following information: 
    1. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.
    2. Email Address: Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
    3. Organization: Enter your organization name
  5. Click Next
  6. Enter in:
    1. User Name: Enter your full Fairpoint Communications' Email Address
    2. Password: Enter your password.
    3. Make sure Regular email (POP) is selected then click next
  7. Enter in:
    1. For your Incoming mail server (POP3): type pop3.fairpoint.net
    2. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
  8. Click the “use secure connection” box on the Outgoing Server
  9. Click finish button
  10. Click on the menu button and select mail and chat accounts
  11. Select the email account and click edit
  12. Click on the servers tab
  13. Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  14. Click ok then click close to finish setting up your email

If this is your first time opening the mail application skip to step 4

  1. With the Mac open click on the mail menu and select preferences
  2. Click on the accounts tab
  3. Click the + sign to add a new account
  4. Enter this information:
  5. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.

  11. Click ok to get back to the accounts screen
  12. Click the Server Settings button
  13. Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  14. Choose authentication password and enter your user name and password
  15. Click ok to finish your email setup

  13. On the accounts page click on the Server Settings button for your outgoing mail server
  14. Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  15. Choose authentication password and enter your user name and password
  16. Click ok to finish your email setup

  9. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
  10. Click on the use only this server box
  11. Click the check box for Use Authentication box and enter in your user name and password
  12. On the “Account Summary” screen make sure all information is correct and click continue
  13. Click the Server Settings button
  14. Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  15. Choose authentication password and enter your user name and password

If this is your first time opening the mail application skip to step 4

  1. With Mac mail open Click on the Mail menu and select preferences
  2. Click the Accounts tab
  3. Click the plus icon to create a new account
  4. Enter this information:
    1. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.
    2. Email Address: Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
    3. Password: Enter your password.
       
  5. Click Continue
  6. Click on the account type and select pop
  7. Enter this information:
    1. Description: enter in a name for this account
    2. For your Incoming mail server (POP3): type pop3.fairpoint.net
    3. User Name: Enter your full email address
    4. Password: Enter your password.
  8. Click Continue
  9. Do not click the SSL box and click continue
  10. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
  11. Click on the use only this server bo
  12. Click the check box for Use Authentication box and enter in your user name and password
  13. Click Continue
  14. On the “Account Summary” screen make sure all information is correct and click continue
  15. On the accounts page click on your outgoing mail server and select Edit SMTP Server List
  16. Click on Advanced and click the radio button Use Custom Port and Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  17. Click ok to finish your email setup

Microsoft Entourage (Mac)

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with Entourage for Mac.

  1. With Entourage open From the TOOLS menu select ACCOUNTS settings, this will open the accounts window.
  2. Select NEW.
  3. The "Account Setup Assistant" will launch, enter your full email address in the box (ex. john@fairpoint.net).
  4. Click the arrow in the lower right corner to proceed.
  5. Entourage will try to configure automatically, if it fails, click the arrow in the lower right corner to proceed.
  6. Enter the following information:
    1. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.
    2. Email Address: Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
    3. Account ID: Enter your full Fairpoint Communications' Email Address
    4. Password: Enter your password
    5. Make sure POP is selected and enter
  7. For your Incoming mail server (POP3): type pop3.fairpoint.net
  8. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
  9. Click the arrow in the lower right corner to proceed.
  10. Click the arrow in the lower right corner to proceed.
  11. Click on the skip button
  12. Enter in the name you would like for the account and click finish
  13. Make sure the account is selected and double click on the account
  14. In the sending mail section click on the advanced settings options
  15. Click on the checkbox for “SMTP service requires secure connection”
  16. Click on the checkbox for Override default SMTP port and Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  17. Click on the checkbox for SMTP server requires authentication and make sure the login is correct
  18. Click ok to finish setting up your email

iPhone

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with your iphone.

  1. On your iphone home screen tap the settings icon
  2. Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  3. Tap on Add Account
  4. Tap on Other
  5. Enter this information:
    1. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.
    2. Email Address: Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
    3. Password: Enter your password.
    4. Enter in a description of this account
  6. Tap Save
  7. Tap POP tab
  8. Tap Incoming Mail Server
  9. Enter this information
    1. For your Incoming mail server (POP3): type pop3.fairpoint.net
    2. User Name: Enter your full email address
    3. Password: Enter your password
  10. Scroll down and enter this information
    1. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
    2. User Name: Enter your full email address
    3. Password: Enter your password
  11. Tap Save
  12. If a screen comes up that says “Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL: Tap No
  13. Tap Save
  14. Tap Save
  15. Tap on your email account
  16. Tap on SMTP
  17. Tap on the Primary Server box
  18. Tap on the button with the Use SSL to turn it off
  19. Tap on the server port and Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  20. Tap the SMTP tab in the upper left to go back
  21. Tap the name you have given the account tab in the upper left to go back
  22. Tap the advanced box
  23. Tap on the button with the Use SSL to turn it off
  24. Make sure the Server Port is 110, if not please enter it
  25. Tap the name you have given the account tab in the upper left to go back
  26. Tap the mail tab in the upper left corner to go back to you mail settings
  27. Push the home button to finish

This tutorial will take you through the step by step process of setting up your Fairpoint Communications email with your iPad.
  1. On your Ipad home screen tap the settings icon
  2. Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  3. Tap on Add Account
  4. Tap on Other
  5. Tap Add mail account
  6. Enter this information:
    1. Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the "From" field of your outgoing messages.
    2. Email Address: Enter your full mail address (e.g., john@fairpoint.net).
    3. Password: Enter your password.
    4. Enter in a description of this account
  7. Tap Save
  8. Tap POP tab
  9. Tap Incoming Mail Server
  10. Enter this information:
    1. For your Incoming mail server (POP3): type pop3.fairpoint.net
    2. User Name: Enter your full email address
    3. Password: Enter your password
  11. Scroll down and enter this information
  12. For your Outgoing mail server (SMTP): type smtpauth.fairpoint.net
  13. User Name: Enter your full email address
  14. Password: Enter your password.
  15. Tap Save
  16. If a screen comes up that says “Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL: Tap no
  17. Tap Save
  18. Tap on your email account
  19. Tap on SMTP
  20. Tap on the button with the Use SSL to turn it off
  21. Tap on the server port and Change your outgoing server setting to Incoming port 110, outgoing port 25 – these are generally the default settings
  22. Tap on your email account tab in the upper left to go back
  23. Tap the Done button to go back to your mail settings
  24. Push the home button to finish
